  42. This is a demo of MaxDOS 2.5 for the Commodore Amiga.  MaxDOS is a
  43. full-featured Mac compatible filesystem which allows reading and writing
  44. of Mac high-density floppies and SCSI drives of nearly any type
  45. (hard, optical, floptical, SyQuest, Bernoulli or CD-ROM).  Floppy access
  46. requires a high-density drive and the system file "L:mfm.device".
  47.  
  48. Unlike the actual release version of MaxDOS 2.5, this demo does _not_
  49. allow unlimited reading and writing of files on Mac disks.  You are free
  50. to get directory listings and traverse the directory tree of any Mac
  51. format disk, but you will only be able to actually read file data from
  52. Mac floppies, assuming that you do indeed have a high-density floppy
  53. drive and the "L:mfm.device" file.
  54.

  59. In a nutshell, MaxDOS works like this:
  60.  
  61.   · Mounter is used to analyze drives based on a device driver name
  62.     and unit number.  Mounter uses the results of its analysis to build
  63.     a mountlist for the Mac drive, and will either immediately mount
  64.     the desired partition, or save the mountlist for future use.  This
  65.     demo version does not allow saving of mountlists.
  66.  
  67.   · MaxDOSFiles is a commodity (default hotkey: [CTRL][ALT][M]) which
  68.     allows customization of the display of data fork, resource forks
  69.     and icons, as well as the handling of text translation and MacBinary.
  70.     Use of MaxDOSFiles is entirely optional.
  71.  
  72.   · MaxDOSTypes is a commodity (default hotkey: [SHIFT][ALT][M]) which
  73.     allows setting of the TYPE and CREATOR attributes assigned to newly
  74.     made files on Mac format disks.  It also allows assignment of default
  75.     tools to be called when files with particular TYPEs and CREATORs are
  76.     double-clicked on Workbench.  Use of MaxDOSTypes is entirely optional.

  78.   · The utility program XRes is automatically activated whenever a
  79.     resource fork icon is double-clicked on Workbench.  XRes is for
  80.     eXtraction of Resources.  If you know what Mac resources are, you
  81.     might want to take advantage of this feature.  If you don't know
  82.     about resources, you probably don't need to take advantage of XRes.

  84.   · The utility program XHex is a general purpose hex file viewer.  It
  85.     is sometimes called by XRes, but you may want to use it even for
  86.     general purpose Mac or non-Mac file viewing chores.

  106. ** QUICK-START ***********************************************************

  108. INSTALLATION OF MAXDOS 2.5 DEMO
  109.  
  110.   Installing the MaxDOS 2.5 demo is very straightforward.  Simply
  111.   double-click on the Install MaxDOS Demo icon and follow the directions.
  112.

  114. FLOPPY ACCESS
  115.  
  116.   If you have a high-density floppy drive and were not alerted during
  117.   the installation that floppy access is not possible on your system,
  118.   then you will be able to take advantage of four new mountlists
  119.   installed on your system.
  120.  
  121.   To establish floppy access under Workbench 2.04:
  122.  
  123.     Type the following into a shell window:
  124.  
  125.       mount mf0: from devs:mountlist.maxdos
  126.  
  127.     The mf0: argument might alternately be mf1:, mf2: or mf3:, as
  128.     is appropriate.
  129.  
  130.   To establish floppy access under Workbench 2.1 and above:
  131.  
  132.     Double-click on the appropriate mountlist icon(s) in the
  133.     Storage/DOSDrivers drawer.
  134.

  136. HARD DRIVE ACCESS
  137.  
  138.   The installation procedure places a program called Mounter in the
  139.   Utilities drawer.  This program is responsible for analyzing Mac
  140.   format hard drive partitions and telling the operating system and
  141.   MaxDOS how to properly access them.  Mounter needs two key pieces
  142.   of information in order to do its job--the first is the appropriate
  143.   Device driver name, which can be selected from the Devices menu.
  144.   The other is the SCSI Unit number of the drive to be accessed--
  145.   this number can usually be determined by examining a thumbwheel
  146.   on the rear of the drive.  If the partition to be mounted is an
  147.   A-Max or Emplant partition on an internal drive, then the SCSI
  148.   Unit number may need to be determined through trial and error
  149.   (it is a number from 0 to 7).  After the Device and Unit have been
  150.   entered, click the Analyze Device gadget--if the Device and Unit
  151.   provided are correct, the next gadget, Find Partitions, will
  152.   become available.  Assuming that the drive being analyzed does
  153.   indeed contain at least one Mac format partition, a click on
  154.   Find Partitions will provide a scrolling list of available Mac
  155.   partitions.  Simply click on the parition you are interested in,
  156.   and then click Mount Partition to make the partition immediately
  157.   available to all applications.  The demo version does not save
  158.   mountlists.

  161. COMMODITIES
  162.  
  163.   The installation process also installs two utilities as part of
  164.   the MaxDOS system.  By default, these commodities can be
  165.   summoned by pressing the hot-key [CTRL][ALT][M] for MaxDOSFiles
  166.   or [SHIFT][ALT][M] for MaxDOSTypes.  MaxDOSFiles allows
  167.   customization of MaxDOS' handling of file listings and icons.
  168.   MaxDOSTypes allows customization o MaxDOS' assignment of and
  169.   reactions to Mac files' CREATOR and TYPE attributes.  Use of
  170.   both of these utilities is optional--MaxDOS will work fine (but
  171.   be less customizable) without them.

  174. THE "REAL" DOCUMENTATION
  175.  
  176.   The full release version of MaxDOS 2.5 features in-depth electronic
  177.   documentation in AmigaGuide format (it is not included, however,
  178.   in this demo distribution).  This is not simply a "linear" manual
  179.   dropped into a text file--instead, it is an intuitively constructed
  180.   document which takes thorough advantage of the power of hypertext.
  181.   It also has the advantages of being readily updated and being
  182.   available even when your MaxDOS package might not be.

  185. REMOVAL OF MAXDOS 2.5 DEMO

  187.   When you are done experiencing the power of MaxDOS 2.5, simply
  188.   double-click the Remove MaxDOS Demo icon, and all MaxDOS-related
  189.   files will be tidily deleted from your system.
